Chemical peels can aide in the treatment of scars, uneven skin tone, blemishes and wrinkles. While there are many different types, they generally work by removing the outermost layers of the skin so as to reveal smoother skin underneath. Selection of the appropriate mixture depends on your in-office evaluation and discussion with Dr. Sohrab, and can vary depending on skin tone and texture and the goals of the treatment.
Results vary depending on the type and depth of peel. Deeper peels tend to have longer-lasting results, but also tend to have more downtime associated with the recovery. All peels can cause mild inflammation and swelling for a few days. Mild peels can cause redness and flaking up to a week, whereas stronger (medium and deep) peels can have further redness and crusting with swelling that can last for a few weeks. Irritation resolves as old skin peels and is replaced by new cells, leading to more resilient and tighter skin with time. It is particularly important to keep skin moisturized and to use sunscreen following treatment.
