What Is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a cosmetic treatment that involves applying a specialized solution to the skin. The strength and ingredients can vary, customized to treat different concerns and achieve different goals. The chemical solution works by eliminating the upper layers of skin, where damaged or aged skin cells reside. At the same time, the formula is packed with nourishing elements that boost collagen production and revitalize the skin.

Top concerns patients can treat include:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Skin pigmentation concerns
  • Some scarring
  • Acne
  • Enlarged pores
  • And more

Our Chemical Peel Options

  • PCA Peels: The PCA line of chemical peels is backed by 30+ years of skin care excellence. Their line includes a range of formulas suitable for varied concerns and all skin types.
  • Body Peels: Body peels ontain higher concentrations of active ingredients, making them more suitable for areas with thicker skin. Best for areas like the arms, back, chest, and legs.
  • TCA Peels: Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels are a top choice for medium to deep chemical peels. This makes them suitable for more notable concerns such as scarring, deeper lines, and skin pigmentation.

What Is a Chemical Peel Session Like?

Most patients will need about 30 to 60 minutes for their peel. Despite how it might sound, the treatment tends to be very well tolerated. Depending on the strength of your peel, you may feel little more than a mild tingling. For deep peels, this may feel more like a mild stinging or burning. But it should never actually be painful.

A typical visit involves four steps:
  • We clean the skin with a gentle cleanser and then pat it dry.
  • We apply the peel directly to the treatment area in even layers.
  • We let the peel sit for a time. The amount of time will depend on the type of peel you receive.
  • We then neutralize and clean off the peel.

Benefits of Chemical Peels

  • Suitable for all skin tones
  • Treat multiple skin concerns at once
  • Adaptable strength

Am I a Candidate for a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels can provide safe skin rejuvenation for a broad range of patients. The flexibility of the formulas allows for highly tailored treatment that meets each patient’s needs. However, patients will first need to have no active skin inflammation or conditions. While chemical peels can help prevent acne, they work best between breakouts to avoid irritating the skin.

We consult extensively with each patient to evaluate their skin and its needs. Even if a chemical peel might not be your best option, we have alternatives for every skin type and a range of concerns.

Is There a Recovery Period?

Your skin can need anywhere from a few days to about 2 weeks to recover from a chemical peel. The duration and intensity of the recovery period will depend on how deep your peel was. Light peels can result in some mild redness and swelling for a few days. But this can last a couple of weeks for deeper peels. Dr. Sohrab will outline what to expect for your recovery based on your chosen peel type. She also provides clear tips on how to care for your skin following a treatment.

When Can I See the Results?

On average, chemical peel results begin to appear within about 1 to 2 weeks. Again, the timeline will depend on the specific formula used. Patients can expect notable results with even a single treatment, though some may need a regimen of 3 to 5 sessions for full results.

How Long Do the Results Last?

Lighter peels can deliver improvements that last several months, while deeper peels can provide benefits for well over a year. Factors like patient age, health, and lifestyle will also affect the duration of the results. You can promote longer-lasting results by taking steps like:

  • Staying hydrated
  • Avoiding excess sun exposure
  • Avoiding smoking
  • Proper nutritional intake
  • Practicing good at-home skin care
