What is Sculptra Aesthetic?

Sculptra Aesthetic is a unique type of dermal filler composed of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) microparticles, a biodegradable and biocompatible polymer that is commonly used in absorbable stitches. It is safe to use in the restoration of areas of facial fat loss and soft tissue atrophy and was FDA approved in 2004.

The mechanism of action is stimulation of new collagen production in areas of placement over the course of 6-12 months, which strengthens the quality and appearance of your facial soft tissues thereby improving the appearance. As we age, our skin produces less collagen and our skin loses elasticity, which can lead to looseness and wrinkles. Sculptra can reverse some of these changes by stimulating collagen production, restoring our collagen.

What areas can be addressed with Sculptra?

Sculptra aesthetic can be used in the same areas as facial fillers to correct areas of fat and bone loss due to aging. It can reduce the appearance of marionette lines, nasolabial folds, and temple hollowing. It can also help sharpen the frame of the face and the cheekbones to restore facial contours.

What should I expect from the treatment?

When you arrive for the treatment, as you would with filler treatment, the face will be cleaned and numbed with a topical anesthetic cream. Sculptra comes in the form of a powder that is prepared prior to treatment by mixing with sterile water and local anesthetic, which minimizes the discomfort from the treatment. Typically, patients feel pressure rather than pain from the treatment. Afterward, there may be swelling, soreness, redness, or bruising at the placement sites. These may vary from patient to patient.

When can I expect to see results?

Unlike hyaluronic acid gel fillers, Sculptra relies on your body’s collagen production for volumization and structuring in the face. Immediately after the treatment, due to the fluid effect, there will be an improvement. However, over the next few days, the fluid effect will dissipate and the Sculptra will be absorbed so that the body’s work can begin. The true results are gradual and can take 2-3 months to appear. The results are worth the wait as they can last up to 2 years!
